Studying Business English in the UK Post-Brexit
Studying Business English in the UK Post-Brexit
In a previous article, we discussed why Business English is still important for international trade in Europe post-Brexit. The English-speaking world reaches far beyond the UK.
The British Council seems confident that “English will continue to be the lingua franca in the EU after Brexit.” They have new evidence apparently.
Governments across Europe also recognise the importance of English for cross-border trade and international competition.
It would seem that young people have the same opinion as “leaders”. English tuition and proficiency exams are dominated by European students. Around 75% of international students taking up seats in English Universities are European nationals.
However, post-Brexit, studying business English in the UK is not as simple as booking a hotel and hopping on a plane.
Austrians hoping to study English in the UK have to go through dreaded visa protocols. That means spending at least half a day sitting in your local visa application centre.
Visa Requirements for Studying English
You can study business English on a short-stay standard visa for 6-months. If you want to stay in the UK for longer, you will need to apply for:
Permits you to attend an English language course in the UK for up to 11 months. The fee is £186. You also have to pay an additional £470 for healthcare.
Austrians aged 16 and over can apply for a student visa to study in the UK for courses longer than 11 months. The following conditions apply:

Student visas expire after 12 months. To continue your studies you will have to extend your visa for an additional 12 months. The cost for a visa extension is £348 if you apply from outside the UK and £475 from inside the UK
If the course you have enrolled in is degree level, you can stay in the UK for 5 years. For below degree level, the maximum stay is 2 years.
Applying For a UK Study Visa
You can apply for a visa at least 6 months before your course is due to start, but no later than 3 weeks. It takes 3 weeks for student visas to be authorised.
For an additional fee, you can apply for priority service and collect your visa within 5 working days, or a super-priority service for next day collection.
Students staying for longer than six months must apply for a biometric residence permit (BRP).
